The Short Answer

California ICU travel jobs advertise about $2,513 a week at the median. What reaches you depends on the taxable split, and LA's GSA ceiling is $1,995 a week. California tax is not included.

Read the full breakdown below for detailed analysis, examples, and actionable steps.

Search “ICU travel nurse pay Los Angeles” and you get job listings: dozens of them, each with its own weekly figure and most with the breakdown behind a sign-up prompt. The figures also disagree. A listing’s weekly number is a blended total of taxable wages and tax-free stipends. It tells you what the package costs the agency, not what lands in your account.

This guide takes one published benchmark, shows what two different pay structures do to it, and sets it against the one Los Angeles figure the federal government publishes: the GSA per diem ceiling. It also says plainly what it cannot tell you, because California is a state this site cannot yet compute.

The Benchmark: California ICU Travel Jobs

BluePipes’ California ICU travel listings page (read 13 October 2026) states an average of $2,588 per week and a median of $2,513 per week for Travel Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse jobs “over the last 7 days,” with 1,368 California ICU jobs listed that day. The pay figures carry no date of their own, and the window is a rolling seven days, so the number moves as listings come and go.

Two limits matter:

  • It covers all of California, not Los Angeles. Los Angeles is a large market, but the figure also includes the Bay Area, San Diego and the Central Valley. We do not have a Los Angeles-only number from a source we can verify, so we do not print one.
  • It is an advertised figure, not a paycheck. It is what listings say, before tax, and it does not tell you how much of the week is taxable.

We use the $2,513 median for the rest of this guide as a round starting point, not a prediction for your offer.

One Weekly Figure, Two Very Different Structures

A travel package is usually a modest taxable hourly wage plus tax-free housing and meals stipends. Two offers can carry the same blended weekly total and split it differently. Here are two illustrations of a $2,513 week at 36 hours. They are examples, not real offers. Both assume a single filer with a valid tax home, the 2026 standard deduction, and income at this rate for a full year.

Package APackage B
Taxable rate × hours$30 × 36 = $1,080$38 × 36 = $1,368
Tax-free stipends$1,433$1,145
Gross weekly$2,513$2,513
Federal income tax≈ $88≈ $131
FICA≈ $83≈ $105
Take-home before California tax≈ $2,342≈ $2,277

About $65 a week apart, from nothing but the split. Package B’s taxable wages are high enough to reach the 22% federal bracket; Package A’s stay in the 12% bracket. Overtime changes the comparison in a way this table does not capture: it is paid on the taxable rate, so the higher-taxable package earns more per overtime hour, which can offset or even reverse its tax disadvantage depending on each offer’s overtime multiplier. Ask for the overtime rate in writing before comparing. Blended Rate vs. Taxable Rate walks through why.

The federal figures use the 2026 brackets and standard deduction from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 and the FICA rates from SSA, the same sourced inputs the Pay Calculator uses.

California tax is not in that table, and that is not a small omission. California levies a state income tax on wages earned there, and this site has no sourced California bracket schedule, so the calculator withholds a net figure for a California assignment rather than invent one. We will not print a California tax number we cannot source. Treat the bottom line as an upper bound. Two further points:

  • A California assignment taxes your California wages even if your tax home is in another state, and if you live in a state that taxes residents, that state may tax them as well.
  • California also withholds State Disability Insurance from employees. We have not sourced the current rate, so check it on your offer’s pay breakdown or with the EDD.

The Government Number: Los Angeles’s GSA Stipend Ceiling

Los Angeles is in GSA’s “Los Angeles” locality, which also covers Orange and Ventura counties and Edwards AFB (excluding the city of Santa Monica). For fiscal year 2027, effective 1 October 2026:

ItemPer dayPer week (× 7)
Lodging (the same all year)$199$1,393
Meals & Incidental Expenses (M&IE)$86$602
Combined ceiling$285$1,995

Unlike Denver or Phoenix, the Los Angeles lodging rate does not change by month, so your start date does not move the ceiling.

The ceiling caps what an accountable-plan stipend can pay a nurse with a valid tax home. It is not what a typical package pays. Package A’s $1,433 stipend exceeds the $1,393 lodging line, which is fine only because it also covers meals; compare a housing stipend to the lodging line and a combined stipend to the combined ceiling. Both examples sit under $1,995. A package whose stipends exceed the ceiling has a problem worth raising before you sign. Check your dates against GSA’s own lookup, or use the GSA Rate Explorer and the Los Angeles GSA page.

Rent is the other side. Our editorial estimate for a Los Angeles one-bedroom is on the Los Angeles city guide. It is our estimate, not measured data, so check current listings for your actual dates.

Turning a Specific Offer Into a Real Number

  1. Enter the offer’s taxable hourly rate, hours and stipends in the Pay Calculator, assignment state California. Expect federal and FICA lines, and no net figure.
  2. Check the housing stipend against $1,393 and housing plus meals against $1,995.
  3. Confirm the stipend is yours to receive. It needs a valid tax home; the Tax Home Validator walks through the IRS tests.
  4. Grade the whole package with Contract Grade. It scores against California statewide pay data scaled by specialty, not a Los Angeles-specific figure.
  5. For the fine print a weekly headline never shows, such as guaranteed hours and cancellation terms, read How to Read a Travel Nurse Contract Offer.

For the specialty overall, see the ICU travel nurse page. For the wider picture on how pay rates are quoted and compared, see How Much Do Travel Nurses Make and the California pay guide. The same method, applied to other cities, is in the Houston ICU guide, the Seattle ICU guide and the Denver ICU guide.

Data reviewed October 2026. GSA per diem figures come from GSA’s published FY2027 locality rates (see our methodology). Federal tax figures come from IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 and SSA. The weekly figures attributed to BluePipes are that source’s own, as of the date shown. Our city and specialty pay estimates are editorial, not measured, surveyed or aggregated from contract data. This is general information, not tax advice.
