The Short Answer

What travel occupational therapists earn in 2026: BLS May 2025 median, BluePipes travel listing median, how stipends are capped, NBCOT and the OT Compact.

Read the full breakdown below for detailed analysis, examples, and actionable steps.

Travel occupational therapist pay follows the travel nurse pattern: a taxable hourly wage plus tax-free housing and meal stipends, capped by GSA per diem and conditional on a qualifying tax home. This page lines up the published figures for OTs. Every number comes from a page we read on the date shown, and we are a pay calculator and data site, not an agency or a job board.

What occupational therapists earn as staff (BLS)

When we read the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook page for Occupational Therapists on 27 October 2026 (page last modified 27 August 2026), its quick facts said:

  • 2025 median pay: $100,330 a year, $48.24 an hour.
  • Number of jobs, 2025: 169,600.
  • Job outlook, 2025–35: 15%, which BLS labels “much faster than average”, an employment change of 25,200.
  • Typical entry-level education: master’s degree.

The pay section reads: “The median annual wage for occupational therapists was $100,330 in May 2025”, with “the lowest 10 percent earned less than $71,690, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $131,950.” On licensing, the page says “All states require occupational therapists to be licensed” and that “Therapists must pass the qualifying exam to use the title ‘Occupational Therapist Registered’ (OTR).”

These are annual staff wages across the whole occupation. A travel contract is quoted weekly for a fixed number of weeks, so the two are not directly comparable; the BLS median is the benchmark for what the facility pays its own therapists in the market you are considering.

What travel OT listings pay (BluePipes)

When we read BluePipes’ travel occupational therapist jobs page on 27 October 2026, it said: “The median pay for Travel Occupational Therapist jobs on BluePipes over the last 7 days is $2207 per week”, the average was $2,152 a week, and “There are 3643 Travel Occupational Therapist jobs on BluePipes as of October 27, 2026.” It named California, Illinois and Oregon as the states with the most listings, without printing counts.

These are listing figures for the previous seven days, not signed contracts, and they move daily. The OT median was the highest of the four allied categories we read that day (physical therapist $2,161, rad tech $2,147, surgical tech $1,933 on the same site), but the market is smaller than PT: 3,643 OT listings against 13,030. The figure blends settings, from acute care and inpatient rehab to skilled nursing, schools, outpatient and home health.

How the travel package is built

A travel OT offer has two parts:

  1. A taxable hourly wage, paid for hours worked and subject to federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and state income tax where the state levies one.
  2. Tax-free stipends for housing and for meals and incidentals, which you can receive untaxed only if you maintain a qualifying tax home and are working away from it. Without one, the whole package is taxable wages.

The stipends are capped by GSA per diem for the assignment locality, with two ceilings:

  • Housing ceiling = GSA lodging rate × 7.
  • Combined per diem ceiling = (lodging + meals and incidentals) × 7.

Under GSA FY2027 per diem (1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027) the CONUS standard rate, which applies anywhere GSA lists no specific locality, is $113 a night lodging and $68 a day M&IE. In the three states BluePipes named for OT listings:

LocationHousing ceiling (lodging × 7)Combined ceiling ((lodging + M&IE) × 7)
Standard-rate areas$791, all year$1,267, all year
Los Angeles, CA$1,393, all year$1,995, all year
Sacramento, CA$1,092, all year$1,694, all year
Chicago, IL (Cook / Lake)$1,036 (Dec–Mar) to $1,666 (Apr–Jun)$1,680 (Dec–Mar) to $2,310 (Apr–Jun)
Portland, OR$1,127, all year$1,729, all year

Compare a housing stipend against the housing column only. A housing stipend above the lodging ceiling should be taxed as wages, and an offer that quotes the combined figure as “the stipend max” is overstating what can be paid tax-free for housing. Chicago has four lodging rates across the year ($148 December to March, $238 April to June, $213 July and August, $232 September to November), so a 13-week contract there can cross two or three ceilings. Month-by-month schedules are on the per diem pages for California, Illinois and Oregon.

Check the stipend with the stipend calculator and run the taxable wage through the tax calculator for federal tax and FICA. The tools are labelled for nurses but the arithmetic is the same for any W-2 traveler paid a wage plus stipends; for most states the tool computes federal tax and FICA and says state tax is excluded rather than guessing a rate.

NBCOT, state licensure and the OT Compact

The national certification body is the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. Its homepage, read on 27 October 2026, names the two credentials it awards, “OTR®” and “COTA®”. Its certification exam handbook (revision marked rev092526), read the same day, says “OTR exam candidates must graduate with an entry-level occupational therapy degree from an ACOTE®-accredited occupational therapy (OT) program”, describes the OTR exam as 180 items in a timed, four-hour, computer-based format, and states: “Currently, 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia require NBCOT initial certification for occupational therapy state regulation (e.g., licensing).” The handbook did not print the exam fee, so we do not quote one.

Certification is separate from the state license, which you still need in every state you work in. For travelers the relevant development is the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact. When we read otcompact.gov on 27 October 2026, it described the compact as “an interstate compact, or formal agreement among states, that facilitates interstate practice of occupational therapy” and “a joint initiative of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)” and NBCOT. Practitioners “licensed in good standing in a Compact member state will be eligible to practice in other Compact member states”, but “Each OTC state will open applications at their own pace”, and “You can only apply when the state opens applications, deems you eligible to apply, AND your application is approved”, through a system called CompactConnect rather than the state board. The homepage did not print a member-state count, and its map and news pages returned only a redirect when we tried to read them, so we do not quote a number. AOTA’s compact page, read the same day, says “Several states are now issuing compact privileges to practice” without listing them.

The practical reading: the OT compact is live but rolling out state by state, so for any specific assignment, check whether both your home state and the destination state are issuing privileges yet. If not, it is a full state license application, as it is for every rad tech and surgical tech. The PT Compact, by comparison, listed 38 states issuing privileges on the same day.

How allied travel differs from RN travel

The allied health hub covers the general picture, and the travel respiratory therapist page is the worked example. For OTs specifically:

  • Same package, same tax rules. Taxable wage plus GSA-capped stipends, tax home required, two-state tax exposure if your home state taxes wages.
  • A compact exists but is still rolling out. Do not assume a privilege is available until both states say so.
  • Setting and caseload are the negotiation points. Ask for expected productivity in writing, and for school contracts, whether the weekly rate assumes a school calendar with unpaid breaks.
  • A mid-sized market. 3,643 BluePipes listings on 27 October 2026, between PT (13,030) and surgical tech (1,017).

Finding a travel OT contract

We do not place travelers and we are not a staffing agency. If you want a contract, you can tell us what you are looking for: the form is written for nurses, so choose “Other” as the specialty and put “occupational therapist”, your preferred settings and your state licenses or compact status in the notes. With your permission we introduce you to a partner recruiter whose agency has a referral agreement with us, or we tell you if none covers your request yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do travel occupational therapists make per week?

When we read BluePipes on 27 October 2026, its travel occupational therapist listings page said the median pay for travel occupational therapist jobs over the previous seven days was $2,207 a week, the average was $2,152, and there were 3,643 travel occupational therapist jobs on the site that day, with California, Illinois and Oregon named as the states with the most listings. These are listing figures, not signed contracts, and they change daily.

What is the median salary for an occupational therapist?

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, read 27 October 2026, says the median annual wage for occupational therapists was $100,330 in May 2025 ($48.24 an hour), with the lowest 10 percent earning less than $71,690 and the highest 10 percent more than $131,950. BLS projects 15% employment growth from 2025 to 2035. These are staff wages for the whole occupation, not travel pay.

Is there an OT licensure compact?

Yes, but it is newer than the PT Compact. When we read otcompact.gov on 27 October 2026 it described the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact as a joint initiative of AOTA and NBCOT, said each member state opens applications at its own pace, and did not print a member-state count. AOTA’s compact page the same day said several states are now issuing compact privileges. Check the compact map for your home and destination states before relying on it.

What is the maximum tax-free housing stipend for a travel OT?

For a traveler with a qualifying tax home, the weekly housing ceiling is the GSA lodging rate for the assignment locality times seven. Under GSA FY2027 per diem the standard rate is $113 a night, so $791 a week anywhere GSA lists no locality; Portland, Oregon is $1,127 a week all year and Chicago runs from $1,036 (December to March) to $1,666 (April to June). The combined per diem ceiling adds the meals rate and is a different, higher number.

Data reviewed 27 October 2026. BLS figures are from the Occupational Outlook Handbook as read on that date (May 2025 wages, 2025–35 projections). Weekly pay figures attributed to BluePipes are that site’s own, as published on 27 October 2026. GSA figures are GSA’s FY2027 locality rates. NBCOT and OT Compact statements are from nbcot.org, otcompact.gov and aota.org as read on 27 October 2026. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
