Median vs average CRNA pay
The national average (mean) CRNA wage was $248,320, $11,730 above the median. High earners pull the average up, so the median is the better guide to what a typical nurse anesthetist earns. Half of U.S. nurse anesthetists earned between $206,730 and $294,350.
CRNA vs RN pay
Nationally the CRNA median is $139,040 above the RN median of $97,550. See registered nurse salary by state for the RN side and nurse practitioner salary by state for the other advanced-practice role; each CRNA state page shows the gap in that state.
Higher pay is not always more take-home
Nine states — Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming — levy no state income tax on wages, which each state page accounts for in its paycheck table. Elsewhere we show federal tax and FICA and say plainly that state tax is not included, rather than guess a rate.
Staff CRNA pay vs travel CRNA contracts
BLS measures employed nurse anesthetists. Travel and locum CRNA contracts are priced differently — a taxable hourly rate plus tax-free stipends capped by GSA per diem, or a 1099 day rate — and we hold no sourced data on them. For how those packages are structured, see our CRNA travel contract page and the W-2 vs 1099 calculator.
