The Short Answer
How to negotiate an oncology travel contract: what BluePipes listings showed, why the ONS chemo card and OCN matter, and how to check the stipend against GSA.
Read the full breakdown below for detailed analysis, examples, and actionable steps.
When we read BluePipes’ travel oncology listings page on 25 October 2026, it gave a median of $2,203 a week and an average of $2,130 for travel oncology RN listings over the previous seven days, with 2,779 jobs listed that day. The states with the most listings were Georgia, Kansas and Massachusetts. That is a rolling figure from job listings, not a survey of signed contracts, and it moves from day to day.
Treat the median as a reference point. What moves an oncology offer is whether you can give chemotherapy from your first shift, what kind of oncology unit it is, and how much of the package is tax-free stipend. Our own oncology figure is an editorial estimate, not measured data: see the oncology travel nurse salary page for it and for the stipend range by location.
1. Find out what kind of oncology unit it is
“Oncology” covers inpatient medical oncology, bone marrow transplant, outpatient infusion and radiation oncology. Each has a different day. Ask the recruiter, or the manager on the interview call:
- Setting. Inpatient unit, outpatient infusion center, or both? Ask for the shift pattern in writing, including nights, weekends and holidays, because the two settings can run very different schedules.
- Patient population. Solid tumor, hematologic malignancies, or transplant? Is it adult only?
- Chemotherapy. Will you administer chemotherapy and immunotherapy, and by which routes? Is there a pharmacy double-check process you will be oriented to?
- Ratios. What is the usual assignment, and does it change on chemo days?
If your background is outpatient infusion and the opening is an inpatient transplant unit, say so before you accept. A mismatch found on the first shift is the fastest route to a cancelled contract.
2. Bring a current chemo provider card
Oncology units that give chemotherapy often ask for documented chemotherapy competency. Ask the recruiter which credential the facility accepts; one is the provider card from the Oncology Nursing Society. On the ONS course page (read 25 October 2026):
- Completing the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate course (15.25 NCPD contact hours, self-paced, 180 days of access) earns the Certificate of Added Qualification and the ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Provider Card.
- You must score at least 80% on the post-test.
- The certificate is valid for two years and is renewed through a separate renewal course.
The page did not list a price, so we don’t quote one. Check the expiry date before you submit. A card that lapses during the assignment is a credentialing problem for the facility, and you may be pulled from chemo assignments until it is renewed.
3. Put OCN on your profile if you have it
The specialty certification is the OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. ONCC’s OCN page (read 25 October 2026) lists these requirements:
- A current, unencumbered RN license in the US, its territories or Canada.
- At least two years (24 months) as an RN within the four years before you apply.
- At least 2,000 hours of adult oncology nursing practice within the four years before you apply.
- At least 10 contact hours of oncology continuing education (or an oncology academic elective) in the previous 36 months.
- Test fee: $300 for ONS or APHON members, $420 for nonmembers. The certification is valid for four years.
No public source publishes a dollar premium for OCN, so don’t expect a fixed add-on. Use it to shorten the facility’s review and to justify asking for the top of the rate range. Our certification ROI guide covers whether an exam pays for itself.
4. Negotiate floating and cancellation
Oncology travelers may be floated to medical-surgical or telemetry units when census drops. Get the terms in writing:
- Which units you can be floated to, by name, and only where you are competent.
- How often, with a cap per pay period.
- Guaranteed hours. How many shifts can be cancelled for low census without pay? Outpatient infusion centers can also close for holidays. Ask whether those days count against your guarantee.
Our guides to floating clauses and cancellation policies cover the wording to look for.
5. Compare the whole week, not the hourly rate
An oncology offer is a taxable hourly wage plus tax-free housing and meal stipends. The stipends are tax-free only if you keep a qualifying tax home, and only up to the GSA per diem rate for the assignment locality. Two different ceilings apply:
- The housing stipend ceiling is the GSA lodging rate × 7.
- The combined per diem ceiling is (lodging + meals and incidentals) × 7.
Using GSA’s FY2027 rates (October 2026 to September 2027), in the three states that led the BluePipes listings:
| Location | Housing ceiling (lodging × 7) | Combined ceiling ((lodging + M&IE) × 7) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-rate areas (anywhere GSA lists no locality) | $791, all year | $1,267, all year |
| Atlanta, GA (Fulton / DeKalb) | $1,316 (Oct–Dec, Apr–Sep) to $1,449 (Jan–Mar peak) | $1,918 to $2,051 (Jan–Mar peak) |
| Kansas City / Overland Park, KS (Wyandotte / Johnson / Leavenworth) | $973, all year | $1,533, all year |
| Boston / Cambridge, MA | $1,491 (Nov–Feb) to $2,555 (Sep–Oct peak) | $2,135 (Nov–Feb) to $3,199 (Sep–Oct peak) |
Compare a housing stipend with the housing column, not the combined one. A housing stipend above the lodging ceiling should be taxed as wages; ask how the agency handles it. Every locality, with its month-by-month schedule, is on the per diem pages for Georgia, Kansas and Massachusetts.
Put two offers side by side in the contract comparison tool and check the stipend with the stipend calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do oncology travel nurses need a chemo card?
Units that give chemotherapy often ask for documented chemotherapy competency, and the ONS card is one way to show it. The ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Provider Card is issued when you complete the ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate course, and ONS says the certificate is valid for two years. Check the listing and ask the recruiter before you submit, because a facility can decline a traveler who cannot give chemo from day one.
Is OCN certification required for oncology travel jobs?
Not usually. OCN is a specialty certification from ONCC that needs 2,000 hours of adult oncology nursing practice in the previous four years, two years as an RN and 10 contact hours of oncology continuing education. It strengthens your profile, but no public source puts a fixed dollar premium on it.
How much do oncology travel nurses make per week?
Weekly pay varies by location and the stipend split. When we read BluePipes on 25 October 2026, its travel oncology RN page gave a median of $2,203 a week for listings over the previous seven days, with 2,779 jobs listed that day. That is a listing median, not a survey of signed contracts, and it changes daily.
What is the maximum tax-free housing stipend for an oncology travel nurse?
The housing ceiling is the GSA lodging rate for the assignment locality times seven. For FY2027 that is $791 a week in standard-rate areas and, for example, $1,316 to $1,449 a week in Atlanta, depending on the month. Adding the meals rate gives the combined per diem ceiling, which is a different, higher number.
Data reviewed 25 October 2026. Weekly pay figures attributed to BluePipes are that site’s own, as published on 25 October 2026. GSA figures are GSA’s FY2027 locality rates. Certification requirements are from ONS and ONCC, as published on the date shown. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
